New Philanthropy Capital (NPC)
What we've achieved for charities

Here are some examples of how we have helped charities in the past:

  • Since the launch of our truancy and exclusion report - School’s Out? - in September 2005, NPC has directed more than £2.5m towards charities that help children to continue their education and build themselves a brighter future.
  • From Newham in East London to Easterhouse in Glasgow and Ballynafeigh in Belfast, over 70% of NPC's charity recommendations have already received funding. These effective charities are already making a huge impact in their communities, helping everyone from disabled children to isolated older people.

  • Our report, Funding success, which describes NPC's process of analysing charities, has been of significant interest to charities. Over 1,000 charities have downloaded the report since its launch.
  • At least 75% of the grants we advise on are unrestricted, and a third are disbursed over a number of years. This means charities can plan ahead and respond to the needs of the people they serve. It also allows donors to build longer term relationships with charities, if they choose.
  • NPC has advised on three Guardian and Observer Christmas Appeals, which raised £740,000 for 29 charities working in the following fields: mental health, domestic violence and older people. The publicity these charities received was as welcome as the donations. During the 2006 appeal, a small Scottish charity was interviewed on radio. Afterwards, its switchboard was jammed with people needing the charity’s help and wanting to fund it.

Charity insight

"More than 500,000 women experience domestic violence each year. The emotional costs of domestic violence on the women and their children are immense."

HALT supports women in Leeds who have been victims of domestic violence with practical and legal help. HALT enables women and their children to stay in their homes safely by putting legal policies into practice. In 2005 HALT worked with just under 4,000 women.
