Green philanthropy: Funding charitable solutions to environment problems

Bernard Mercer

October 2007, 167 pages

New Philanthropy Capital_image_Trees on an islandIt is clear that the world’s environment faces serious problems. Less clear is how donors can help to solve these problems and create positive change.

NPC's first report on environmental issues, Green philanthropy, equips donors with the information they need to understand environmental issues and outlines solutions charities are using to tackle them.

Did you know?

  • The 100 largest UK charitable trusts allocated less than 2% of their annual funding to environment causes
  • 800 million people living and working around tropical rainforest are directly affected by deforestation.

The report is the first report of its kind. It is a high-level ‘how to’ guide for donors that explains:

  • Information on the problems. Although climate change is grabbing headlines, there are other pressing issues: from deforestation to biodiversity to collapsing fish stock.
  • How charities play a vital role in tackling environment problems and are uniquely placed to make a difference, but are hampered by too little funding.
  • Practical steps for donors. From providing long-term funding to effective charities to sharing experience of what works, the report outlines the main priorities for donors.

‘The environment world is full of myths that need good factual analysis to help us determine what we should do. We can rehabiliate degraded environments, it’s not over. If all successful local projects were scaled up we could really be getting somewhere.'
