Inspiring the next generation of philanthropists

Earlier this month, New Philanthropy Capital ran a workshop for the next generation of philanthropists at Merrill Lynch’s Global Investing Programme, two week-long courses involving 90 young adults whose parents are clients of the private bank.

During the week NPC ran an interactive workshop on the basics of giving and took the participants out to visit some charities so they could see firsthand the work of these organisations and meet the people who benefit from the charities’ efforts. As one participant reflected, ‘Visiting the charity was completely eye-opening. It was the first time I'd seen anything like that, and made me realise what a great impact you could have with a small amount of money ’. The participants then had to pitch the charity they had visited, dragon's den style, to persuade the Merrill Lynch panel to give money to their charity.

‘Our aim was to get these young adults excited about charities. We want them to think about giving money away less in terms of an obligation and more as something fun and rewarding that can also produce tremendous returns for society,’ said Plum Lomax who takes the lead on NPC’s work with young philanthropists.
