NPC can help donors bridge the gap in UK breast cancer care

NPC was concerned to hear recent reports about Kylie Minogue's breast cancer and wishes her well in her recovery.

Incidence of breast cancer continues to rise in the UK and there are over a million new cases diagnosed globally each year.

Despite this, there is relatively little state money for cancer research, around £200 million each year, around four times less, per head of the population, than is spent in the US.

Charities in the UK have a vital role in 'plugging the gap' in state provision to breast cancer patients: funding cancer research, support and information, education, and advocacy.

However, with over 1,000 cancer charities in the UK, and around 70 specialising specifically in breast cancer, it is often difficult for private funders to decide where to donate their money so that it will be put to most effective use and be of most benefit to those who need it.

NPC has visited and analysed a significant number of breast cancer charities and has developed a series of reports to help donors decide where their donation may be most effectively used. Charities include Cancer Research UK (CR UK), Breakthrough Breast Cancer, Maggie's Centres and Cancer BACUP.

These charity recommendations follow NPC's extensive research report 'The hidden assassin - Cancer in the UK - a guide for donors and grant makers' which is available free of charge to charities and funders.
